Restaurant Canessa

On the extreme and evocative tip of the Gulf of Baratti, nestled in the landscape between water and promontory, stands the Canessa Restaurant, since 1927.


Baratti is the only settlement built on the sea by the Etruscan civilisation and is dominated by the promontory on whose summit stands the medieval village of Populonia with its majestic castle. 


It is a seaside resort with about 2 km of beach and 300 m of rocks, rich in history and, with its Archaeological Park, gives every glimpse an indisputable value of cultural interest.


Easily reached by car following the signs for 'Baratti and Populonia' from Viale della Principessa. 

 Nearby: Poggio all'Agnello. A resort with 200 flats that accommodates groups and families and from which a bicycle and pedestrian path leads directly to the Gulf.

The restaurant offers cuisine that is faithful to traditional fish products, seasonality and the dedication of the kitchen staff led by chef Valentina, who focus on a colourful, simple, healthy and succulent menu.

Historical curiosities

The square-plan Tower adjacent to the Restaurant, dates back to the 1400s and 1500s and preserves its original characteristics, both in terms of the main walls and the roofing; the outer walls are almost devoid of windows and the few present are of modest size.


 Over time, the tower served as a customs house and watchtower and, after the Unification of Italy, it was disarmed, passing to the state property and becoming private property. 


 It was the undisputed property of Count Curzio Desideri who, struck by the special bond that the Ligurian Canessa fishermen had for the gulf, had a building constructed next to the Tower, "the Fishermen's House", giving them a dwelling in keeping with the needs of the family who had found a permanent home for their business, in what is now known as the "Porticciolo".


After Vittorio, Emilio Canessa became head of the 'tonnarella', thus passing from generation to generation.
